There are many closes leading to the north and south from the Royal Mile. Closes are narrow passages between the high tenements and lead to the entrance of a tenement. They also sometimes provide access to the rear of the building. There was often a gate at the front entrance which was closed at night. This is a photo of one Close in Edinburgh.
